Building Capacity in Your Organization to Lead Safety Differently

This workshop invites Nexus HSE partner organizations to explore a transformative approach to safety—one that emphasizes adaptive leadership, capacity-building, learning, and shared accountability. This session is designed for leaders, safety professionals, and change agents who are ready to move beyond compliance and toward a culture of learning, resilience, and proactive engagement.
Through facilitated dialogue, interactive exercises, and case studies, participants will:
• Be introduced to the core ideas of Safety Differently
• Better understand their personal leadership style and how to more effectively engage with and develop others.
• Develop strategies to foster psychological safety, trust, and open communication across the organization.
Learn strategies to embed safety leadership into everyday operations, decision-making, and team dynamics.

ASTM E2920-25 Update
In this session, Rob McCafferty , EHS& S Lead at Baxter International, who is on the committee responsible for updating the E2920 consensus standard, outlined the purpose and background of the standard, summarized the most recent updates, and discussed significant additions, changes, and removals.
Rob also described his experiences applying the E2920 standard in previous organizations, addressed the implementation process, challenges in maintaining the data, and the overall value the standard provided to those organizations. During the discussion, Rob responded to several questions submitted by participants

Safety & Health Regulatory Shifts and the Intersociety Forum’s Push for a Resilient OSH Infrastructure
In this Shop Talk session Heather MacDougall ESQ and CSP of MacDougall Solutions discussed how Occupational safety and health policy changes from inside the Washington, DC Beltway and from across the State Capitals of the US continue.
This timely update discussed how regulatory changes are impacting worker safety and health and how organizations are working to shift the conversation beyond compliance.
Heather will discussed updates from federal OSHA, MSHA, NIOSH and CSB as well as from state OSHA programs.

- We engaged in insightful discussions on using AI and technology to improve HSE outcomes and risk assessment, with innovative approaches shared throughout the session.
- We had a interactive discussion and valuable regulatory update.
- The group explored the challenge of balancing accountability with learning, with thoughtful contributions from all attendees.
- A session on HARM offered practical insights into different SIF prevention approaches.
- We were treated to an interactive tour of the Eaton Experience Center showcasing safety features and product design,
- The social hour highlighted the strength of collaboration and the value of shared perspectives.
- Finally, the group reviewed strengths and opportunities within the Eaton EHS program, with active participation during the Partner Exchange.

Occupational Safety and Health-
Where are we, and Where are we going?
In this Shop Talk session Doug Parker, immediate past Assistant Secretary of Labor for Occupational Safety and Health with experience at Cal/OSHA, and MSHA, participated in a Q&A session with Jim Frederick where he shared his perspective on the current state of occupational safety and health.
During the discussion, he responded to several questions submitted by meeting participants, offering insights into both present challenges and future directions for worker protection.

Heat Illness Prevention

This Shop Talk continued the conversation that began on July 16th with our Heat Illness Prevention Regulatory Update.
Nexus HSE Partner Organizations opened the session by highlighting successful and innovative initiatives they’ve implemented to protect their workers from heat Illness. The second half of the session featured an open discussion, offering all attendees the opportunity to ask questions, share their own efforts, and exchange insights.

Heat Illness Prevention Regulatory Update
Beeta Lashkari, a Partner in the OSHA Workplace Safety Practice Group at Conn Maciel Carey, presented an overview of Fed/OSHA’s proposed Heat Injury and Illness Prevention in Outdoor and Indoor Work Settings standard, including a summary of key elements in the proposed rule, such as initial and high heat triggers, monitoring requirements, acclimatization methods, as-needed and mandatory rest break, and recordkeeping obligations; highlights from the June 2025 public rulemaking hearing; and insights into potential next steps and path forward toward promulgation of a final rule. She also provided background and updates on state activity to regulate heat illness hazards in the workplace and discussed the work Conn Maciel Carey has done and will continue to do on behalf of its Employers Heat Illness Prevention Coalition.

This in-person meeting of organizational partners and guests included discussions and information sharing on topics including:
- We engaged in in-depth discussions on Schindler’s EHS improvement journey, led by Scott Johnson, Dave Vanderpool, and Don Papio. Eric McClaskey further enriched the conversation with a presentation on the support and collaboration between IUEC and Schindler throughout the process.
- Dr. Ranjana Mehta provided expert insights into her research on occupational fatigue, focusing on the identification of key predictors and strategies for managing fatigue in high-risk work environments.
- We had an in-depth discussion of the changes to NIOSH and the potential effect on workplace safety.
- Exact Sciences shared their sustainability objectives and their very unique in-house hydroponic farming techniques.
- Plus, all participants were provided with a comprehensive tour of the Exact Sciences laboratories.

Blue Line Discoveries are field observations performed by organizational leaders with the goal of better understanding how work is actually performed. They provide an opportunity for leaders to spend time, connect, and learn from workers in the work environment. This process is driven through humble inquiry and acknowledgement of the workers unique operational intelligence. <br><br>
Lisa Brooks, Nexus HSE and Mara Shapiro, EHS Manager, Eaton Corporation lead a discussion on how they have reframed Eaton field observations as Blue-Line Discoveries and how this has improved the value and return of this time spent in the field.

NASCAR and SIF Prevention
In this Virtual Meeting /Shop Talk Joe Parham, Corporate Safety and Health Manager at Southern Company discussed how safety professionals can adopt new approaches to fatality prevention. He emphasized innovative strategies, including safe failures, critical safety controls, and methods to enhance workers’ ability to recognize hazards with SIF potential.
In a compelling discussion Joe presented parallels between SIF strategies and the significant safety improvements NASCAR implemented following Dale Earnhardt’s tragic accident at the 2001 Daytona 500.
